Amidst the bustling cityscape, stands Masjid Al Muhajirin, a testament to Singapore’s rich Islamic heritage. Masjid Al Muhajirin isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a story etched in time, reflecting the spirit of the Muhajirin, the early Muslim migrants who sought refuge and built new lives. The original Masjid Al Muhajirin, completed in 1977, held a unique place in Singapore’s history. It was the first mosque built under the Mosque Building Fund (MBF), a testament to community effort and dedication. Its architecture, a blend of Persian-Indian and traditional Minangkabau styles, was capped by a distinctive onion-shaped dome. This architectural marvel even earned it a spot on the Toa Payoh Heritage Trail. However, time and progress led to a transformation. In 2006, the old mosque was demolished to make way for the grander Singapore Islamic Hub. This hub, a S$32 million project, combined Masjid Al Muhajirin with the Madrasah Irsyad Zuhri Al-Islamiah and the headquarters of Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS). The new Masjid Al Muhajirin, opened in 2009, retains its historical significance while embracing modernity. The contemporary design incorporates glass panels, aluminum grilles, and arabesque geometric motifs. Arches grace the windows and external walls. Timber-colored concrete supports the roof, while traditional Malay ochre tiles adorn the double-tiered pointed roof. This architectural blend reflects the diverse influences within the Islamic world. Masjid Al Muhajirin at the Singapore Islamic Hub embodies the principles of Iman (Faith), Ilmu (Knowledge), and Amal (Deeds). It serves as a vibrant center for worship, education, and community service, continuing the legacy of the Muhajirin who first established it.
