Feel the cool Jakarta air on your skin. Gaze upon the majestic Al-Azhar Great Mosque. Its white onion dome gleams under the Indonesian sun.

This isn’t just any mosque. The Al-Azhar Great Mosque holds a special place in Jakarta’s history. Built between 1953 and 1958 it was once Jakarta’s largest. The Istiqlal Mosque later surpassed it in size. The Al-Azhar Great Mosque however remains a landmark.

Its construction began with a dream. Fourteen figures from the Masyumi Party envisioned a mosque and school. They founded the Islamic Dormitory School Foundation. The Ministry of Religious Affairs offered limited funds. Jakarta’s mayor generously donated four hectares of land in Kebayoran Baru. Hamka a prominent Indonesian ulama suggested building the mosque first. His vision included ample office space and meeting rooms. This allowed the mosque to function fully even while the school was under construction. Classes could begin immediately.

The Al-Azhar Great Mosque’s story is intertwined with Hamka’s life. He became the mosque’s chief imam in 1959. His appointment reflected his concern for Islam’s role in a society threatened by communism. He championed Islamic knowledge. He aimed to make the mosque a centre for a modern Islamic revival. The mosque became a hub for dakwah spreading the faith. It played a pivotal role during the 1965-1966 anti-communist campaign.

The mosque’s architecture reflects a Middle Eastern influence. Its single minaret and white dome are striking. The white signifies purity and majesty. The tiered staircase adds an elegant touch. This mosque is more than a place of worship. It’s a centre for social activities. It houses a library a lecture hall a clinic and classrooms for both religious and secular subjects. Even dormitories are provided. It’s truly a beacon of Islamic community life.

Al-Azhar Great Mosque is a testament to faith perseverance and community. It stands as a symbol of Jakarta’s rich history and its evolving cultural identity. It’s not merely a building. It’s a living history a vibrant centre of faith education and community. A place where the past meets the present and the future.
