Is it true that this sacred place standing before you has undergone a name change reflecting its evolving story? This is Masjid Al-Ma’arif. It stands as one of Jakarta’s oldest and most historically significant mosques. Once known as Masjid Jagal, Masjid Al-Ma’arif has deep roots in the community.

The story of Masjid Al-Ma’arif begins in 1695. A Bugis merchant named Upu Daeng H Arifuddin founded it. He collaborated with local people. They aimed to spread Islamic teachings. Masjid Al-Ma’arif was also intended to serve merchants and travelers. It became a place of worship and a community hub.

Initially, it was called Masjid Jami Jagal Senen. This name came from its location. It was in the midst of a neighborhood of livestock butchers. In 1969, the name changed to Masjid Raya Al-Arif.

Masjid Al-Ma’arif covers 550 square meters. It stands on a 2,850 square meter plot. The architecture blends Javanese, Dutch colonial, and Middle Eastern styles. The Javanese style dominates. This shows in the two-tiered roof and saka guru construction. This represents a fusion of architectural influences. Local design elements blend with foreign styles.

Inside Masjid Al-Ma’arif, four golden pillars stand tall. They add an element of grandeur. At the back of the mosque lies the tomb of Upu Daeng Arifuddin. He was the mosque’s founder. Four of his companions are also buried there.

Masjid Al-Ma’arif faced demolition in 1969. Governor Ali Sadikin planned to expand Pasar Senen. However, the demolition never happened. The reasons remain unclear to this day. Some say its historical significance saved it.

Upu Daeng Arifuddin was not only a merchant. He was also a descendant of the King of Goa. He was a respected freedom fighter against Dutch colonialism. He passed away in 1745. He was buried near the west side of Masjid Al-Arief Jagal Senen.

A renovation took place in the 1960s. It was funded by a donation of 400 million Rupiah. The money came from a garment company in Pondok Kopi, East Jakarta.

The main building features four central pillars. They support the roof’s structure. The interior includes carpets. A wall separates the men’s and women’s prayer areas. The ablution area is to the south. Separate facilities exist for men and women.

Masjid Al-Ma’arif continues to stand strong. It has stood for centuries. It is a testament to Jakarta’s rich history. It embodies the spirit of community and faith. Take a moment to appreciate Masjid Al-Ma’arif. It serves as a reminder of Jakarta’s past. It also reflects its vibrant cultural tapestry.
