How about stepping back in time to witness the origins of a community’s heart? That’s the story of Masjid Al Khoriyyah. This mosque stands as a testament to faith and community in Jakarta.
Masjid Al Khoriyyah began as a humble place of prayer. It predates Indonesia’s independence. A local Pajang resident named Jenan built it on his own land. This original site was in Pos 1 Pajang. Today that area is part of Soekarno Hatta Airport’s runway.
Around 1955, the community renovated the mosque. This second construction phase coincided with Jenan’s death. His son, H Martha, then took over its care. He worked alongside religious figures. These figures were H Ibun, H Idris, Salih and Kian. Besides prayers, H Ibun also used the mosque for Quran lessons.
In 1979, fate intervened. The area was cleared for Soekarno Hatta Airport. The mosque had to relocate to its current location. H Ibun renamed it Al Khoriyyah.
The community rallied again to rebuild Masjid Al Khoriyyah. People like H Zen, Inan, Kholil, Mawi, Abdul Gani, Limar, Amil Biran, H Tomang, and Sarmilih contributed. H Omang also helped.
H Ibun passed away in 2003. H Rohim became the head of the mosque’s administration. Zakwan was the secretary. H Zen was the treasurer. Under their leadership, Masjid Al Khoriyyah grew stronger. Its building became more grand. The youth group became active. They held weekly Koran studies. They organized Islamic holiday celebrations. They hosted Ramadan events and women’s studies.
In March 2024, H Rohim passed away. In April 2024, the community held democratic elections. They elected a new board for a three-year term. Muhammad Ali became the chairman. Abd Rahman became the vice chairman. Muslim became the secretary. M Yazid Al Bustommy became the treasurer. Other members were elected to various roles. This new administration created the mosque’s first statutes and bylaws. They also improved the mosque’s management.
Their vision is a prosperous community blessed by Allah. This prosperity includes both material and spiritual well-being. Their mission is to make the mosque the center of community activities. They aim to make Masjid Al Khoriyyah a house of worship, a center for Quranic studies, a financial hub, and a business center. Their motto is “From the Mosque, Empowering the People”.
