Masjid Al-Khairatul Islam was built in the 16th century by revered figures known as Datuk. Tini a descendant of one of the Datuks shared stories of the mosque’s origin. Back then the area was a dense forest. The mosque served as both a sanctuary and a strategic meeting point. It was a place for those resisting Dutch colonial rule.
Tini recounts that Masjid Al-Khairatul Islam is among Jakarta’s oldest mosques. Her ancestor Almarhum Haji Abdul Hamid and Datuks Kudul and Ji’in constructed it. They used strong teak wood jackfruit wood and stones from the Ciliwung River.
Kong Cemen a local historian adds to the narrative. He notes that the mosque’s location was once a haven. It sheltered students from Bogor Banten and Pekalongan. They gathered to plan the spread of Islam. They devised tactics to challenge the Dutch in Sunda Kelapa harbor.
The area around Masjid Al-Khairatul Islam was once part of the Tanjung Jaya Kingdom. Prince Surawisesa led it with ancient Sunda Wiwitan beliefs. Nine Datuks played a crucial role. They spread Islam and planned attacks against the Dutch during the colonial era.
Masjid Al-Khairatul Islam underwent renovations in the 1970s. Sadly the original structure was lost. However control has since been returned to Datuk Kudul’s descendants. This ensures the mosque’s legacy continues.
