Amidst the bustling heart of Jakarta, a beacon of faith stands tall. Masjid Al-Jazari, a testament to devotion and community. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a hub of activity, education, and social outreach. Masjid Al-Jazari’s story began in 1953, when a group of visionaries from the Masyumi Party dreamt of a mosque and school in Kebayoran Baru. With the support of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and a generous land donation from Jakarta’s mayor, the Islamic Dormitory School Foundation was born. Construction began on November 19, 1953, and the mosque was completed in 1958. It was originally called Masjid Agung Kebayoran, meaning Kebayoran Great Mosque. It held the title of Jakarta’s largest mosque until the Istiqlal Mosque was completed in 1978. The mosque’s design, a blend of Middle Eastern and European influences, features a distinctive white onion dome and a single minaret. Masjid Al-Jazari’s unique character extends beyond its architecture. It was designed as a modern mosque, equipped with facilities for a wide range of activities. An Islamic library, lecture and seminar halls, a health clinic, classrooms for both religious and secular studies, and dormitories are all part of the complex. In 1960, a pivotal moment occurred. The Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Mahmud Shaltut, visited Jakarta. He suggested renaming the mosque Masjid Al-Azhar, solidifying its connection to the renowned Islamic university in Cairo. He also recognized Buya Hamka, a prominent Indonesian scholar, as the mosque’s Chief Imam. Under Hamka’s leadership, Masjid Al-Jazari became a center for Islamic revival and propagation of faith, particularly during the turbulent times of the mid-1960s. Masjid Al-Jazari’s commitment to education is evident. In 1967, a kindergarten was established within the complex. This laid the groundwork for the eventual establishment of Al-Azhar University Indonesia in 2000. Today, the mosque continues to thrive as a center for religious and social life. It hosts daily religious activities, including the iconic Tafsir Al-Azhar study sessions every Thursday. It also runs social programs, from monthly support for the less fortunate to distributing meals during Ramadan. Masjid Al-Jazari’s legacy extends beyond its walls. It’s the cornerstone of a vast educational network, with over 220 Al-Azhar schools across Indonesia. This network, from kindergarten to high school and university, provides quality education rooted in Islamic values. Masjid Al-Jazari stands as a symbol of unity, education, and community service. Its story is a reminder of the power of vision, dedication, and faith.
