A haven of tranquility amidst Jakarta’s vibrant chaos Masjid Al-Istiqomah stands as a testament to faith. This unassuming mosque in Gambir Central Jakarta boasts a modern minimalist design. Its simple cubistic shapes are accented by a dome a subtle nod to Middle Eastern architecture. Tall windows with elegant arch-patterned tops reminiscent of Andalusian style complete the façade. Masjid Al-Istiqomah isn’t ancient. It’s a result of a complete renovation of a previous structure. The current building is two stories. The first floor houses the main prayer hall. The second floor or mezzanine level provides additional prayer space.
The main prayer hall is a square approximately 120 square meters. This space along with the 100 square meter second floor room can accommodate roughly 450 worshippers. Outdoor terraces and tiled areas can increase capacity by another 100. The mihrab a focal point of the mosque is rectangular 4 by 8 meters. It extends upwards featuring a unique cavity. This cavity shaped like an arched doorway echoes the windows and doors outside. It’s 3 meters wide 7 meters high and 1.5 meters deep. Floral ornaments and blue Islamic stars adorn the cavity complementing the exterior’s design.
Cream-colored granite covers the mihrab’s flanking walls. These 50×100 cm slabs are left unadorned. Calligraphy however is present though not easily visible. Four 40-inch LED TVs two on each floor display prayer times and religious messages. A view of the back of the dome’s 5-meter diameter basin is visible from the front center. The hemispherical basin is decorated with stacked stars. Twelve stained-glass windows with blue yellow green and white star motifs brighten the basin. The ceiling features compartments with Islamic star patterns. Ten windows and three glass doors provide ample natural light. The beige granite floor is covered in a thick dark blue carpet. Ten split air conditioners and six ceiling fans ensure comfortable temperatures.
Masjid Al-Istiqomah isn’t merely a place of worship. It’s a small but significant space where modern design meets traditional Islamic aesthetics.
