What does Istiqlal mean? It means independence in Arabic. Here before us stands the Istiqlal Mosque. It is a beacon of faith and a symbol of Indonesia’s independence. The Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. It is the ninth largest in the world regarding worshiper capacity. It is an iconic landmark for Jakarta.

The Istiqlal Mosque’s story began after Indonesia declared independence in 1945. The mosque was designed to commemorate this freedom. Wahid Hasyim Indonesia’s first minister for religious affairs proposed the idea. President Sukarno supported this vision. Sukarno wanted the mosque to reflect Indonesia’s identity. He wanted it to show the inclusive spirit of Pancasila. Pancasila is Indonesia’s state philosophy emphasizing religious tolerance.

A design competition was held in 1955. Friedrich Silaban a Protestant architect won. His design blended Islamic aesthetics with functional design. Appointing a Christian architect was intentional. It embodied Indonesia’s commitment to unity in diversity.

Sukarno laid the foundation stone on August 24 1961. Construction took 17 years. President Suharto inaugurated the mosque on February 22 1978. The mosque can accommodate over 120000 people.

The Istiqlal Mosque has seven entrances. Each gate is named after one of Allah’s names. The number seven represents the seven heavens in Islamic cosmology. The main prayer hall is spacious. It can accommodate many worshipers. The grand hall provides a welcoming environment. It is a center for interfaith dialogue. It fosters unity among different religious communities.

The mosque’s design includes a massive central dome. The dome is adorned with floral motifs and calligraphy. It represents the beauty of Islamic art. The Istiqlal Mosque also features a towering minaret. It is 66 meters high offering a view of Jakarta’s skyline.

Inside, you can find a collection of Quranic manuscripts and Islamic books. These items showcase Islamic heritage. The Istiqlal Mosque hosts Islamic events and activities. These include Quran recitation competitions and religious seminars.

In 2019 and 2020, the Istiqlal Mosque underwent a major renovation. The marble exterior was polished. Electrical and plumbing systems were upgraded. A new lighting system was installed. Gardens and parks were improved.

A tunnel connects the Istiqlal Mosque to St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral. This tunnel is known as the Terowongan Silaturahmi or Tunnel of Friendship. It symbolizes religious harmony.

The Istiqlal Mosque stands as a testament to Indonesian unity and diversity. It welcomes visitors to experience its beauty and serenity. It is a monument of faith. The Istiqlal Mosque reminds everyone of the importance of religious freedom in Indonesia.
