Perhaps you’ve asked yourself how a Lutheran pastor’s son designed Jakarta’s grandest mosque. The Istiqlal Mosque stands before us. It is a testament to Indonesian independence and religious harmony.

Istiqlal means “independence” in Arabic. This mosque is not just a place of worship. It is a symbol of a nation’s soul.

Wahid Hasyim first proposed the idea for a grand national mosque after Indonesia’s independence in 1945. Anwar Cokroaminoto later chaired the Istiqlal Mosque Foundation. President Sukarno embraced the idea. He supervised the mosque’s construction.

Friedrich Silaban won the design competition in 1954. He was a Christian architect. Sukarno insisted on its location near Merdeka Square. This mirrored Javanese tradition. The king’s palace and grand mosque should stand by the main square. Sukarno also wanted it near Jakarta Cathedral and Immanuel Church. This symbolized religious tolerance.

To create space for the Istiqlal Mosque, the Citadel Prins Frederick was demolished. Sukarno laid the foundation stone on August 24, 1961. Construction spanned 17 years. President Suharto inaugurated the Istiqlal Mosque on February 22, 1978.

The Istiqlal Mosque boasts seven entrances. Each gate carries a name from Al-Asmaul-Husna. These are the names of God in Islam. The number seven represents the Seven Heavens.

The main prayer hall is crowned by a 45-meter diameter dome. This symbolizes the 1945 Proclamation of Indonesian Independence. A stainless steel crescent and star adorn the dome. The dome rests on twelve columns. These represent the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

Inside the Istiqlal Mosque, five floors symbolize the Five Pillars of Islam. They also represent Pancasila. The interior design is minimalist. Stainless steel geometric ornaments decorate the space. Arabic calligraphy displays the names of Allah and Muhammad.

The Istiqlal Mosque’s single minaret stands 66.66 meters tall. It symbolizes the Quran’s verses. A 30-meter stainless steel pinnacle tops the minaret.

The Istiqlal Mosque can accommodate over 200,000 worshippers. During Christian celebrations, the Istiqlal Mosque provides parking for Jakarta Cathedral worshippers.

Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar has championed environmental initiatives. Solar panels, water recycling, and slow-flow faucets now grace the Istiqlal Mosque. The World Bank recognized these efforts. It certified the Istiqlal Mosque as a green place of worship.

Many dignitaries have visited the Istiqlal Mosque. These include Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Angela Merkel. In September 2024, Pope Francis stated that the Istiqlal Mosque proves religious moderation in Indonesia.

The Istiqlal Mosque stands as a symbol of independence. It embodies religious harmony. It demonstrates architectural brilliance. It is a place where faith and national identity intertwine.
