In 1905, a Hindu money lender made a generous gesture. He entrusted land to the family of Syed Ahmad Lebbai. This land was specifically intended for the construction of a mosque. This act of interfaith generosity laid the foundation for what would eventually become Masjid Al-Huda. Masjid Al-Huda, nestled in the Bukit Timah district of Singapore, stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural tapestry of the area. Recognized as part of the National Heritage Board’s Bukit Timah Heritage Trail, Masjid Al-Huda has served as a vital spiritual center for generations of Muslims. The mosque’s early beginnings were humble. Prior to 1925, a small wooden structure served the religious needs of the nearby Malay-Muslim villagers. This original mosque, built in 1925, bore a striking resemblance to traditional Javanese mosques, reflecting the heritage of many of the villagers. Interestingly, the mosque was initially named Masjid Kampong Coronation, after a nearby main street. Locals, however, affectionately referred to it as Masjid Kampong Tempeh, due to its location in the heart of Kampong Tempeh village. The surrounding villages, including Kampong Banjir, Kampong Cantik, and Kampong Holland, all considered this mosque their primary place of worship. Masjid Al-Huda’s name wasn’t adopted until the 1970s. A new management committee, led by the late Mustafa Bin Hj. Ahmad, ushered in this change. This period also saw the introduction of successful weekly religious classes, further solidifying the mosque’s role in the community. As the surrounding area developed and villagers relocated, Masjid Al-Huda remained. It stands as a poignant reminder of the vibrant kampong life that once characterized Bukit Timah. While renovations have modernized certain aspects of the mosque, original features like the minaret, dome, and mihrab have been carefully preserved. Masjid Al-Huda continues to serve the local Muslim community. It also provides a tranquil spiritual escape for travelers seeking respite from the city’s hustle and bustle. This peaceful sanctuary, nestled amidst the modern landscape, offers a unique glimpse into Singapore’s rich past and enduring faith.
