“A mosque with Balinese carvings?” whispered a visitor, captivated by Masjid Al-Hikmah. Masjid Al-Hikmah isn’t your typical mosque. Located on Jalan Soka in Denpasar, it beautifully blends Islamic, Javanese, and Balinese architectural styles. Originally built in 1978 on land donated by local businessman Haji Abdurrahman, the mosque was a simple wooden structure. It wasn’t until 1995 that Masjid Al-Hikmah underwent a dramatic transformation. A generous businessman named Sunarso, originally from Trenggalek in East Java, funded a major renovation. His vision was to create a symbol of tolerance and cultural integration, reflecting the harmonious relationship between Muslims and the predominantly Hindu community in Bali. The renovation incorporated distinctive Balinese architectural elements, alongside Javanese artistry and Middle Eastern influences. Local Balinese artist I Wayan Karim meticulously crafted the intricate carvings that adorn the mosque. From the entrance gate, resembling a traditional Balinese home, to the doors, windows, and even the pulpit, the carvings depict flowers, leaves, and other natural motifs. The gate itself is made from black sea sand, flanked by carved black walls that enclose the mosque complex. Above the gate, a carving portrays a figure holding prayer beads, engaged in dhikr. Inside, the main prayer hall features a blend of architectural styles. The dome roof, a hallmark of Islamic architecture, sits harmoniously alongside a traditional Balinese pyramid roof. This fusion of styles represents the mosque’s unique identity as a place where diverse cultures converge. Masjid Al-Hikmah serves as a vital center for the Muslim community in Denpasar, particularly those from Java, who make up a significant portion of the congregation. It serves not only as a place of worship, accommodating up to 1,000 people, but also as a hub for religious education and community gatherings. During Ramadan, the mosque opens its doors to everyone for iftar, the breaking of the fast, further strengthening the bonds of community and interfaith understanding. Masjid Al-Hikmah stands as a testament to the power of unity and tolerance. It’s a place where cultural differences are celebrated, and the spirit of harmony prevails.
