Masjid Al Hidayah in Kaliabang Bungur Bekasi has a story to tell. It began life in 1935 as Masjid Jami an-Nur a humble structure built on land donated by H James and others. Its simple design reflected the hardships of the time under colonial rule. The floor was just earth covered with pandan mats. It could hold only about 70 people.
But this unassuming mosque became a crucial base for young Muslims. It was a training ground for the Hizbullah and Sabilillah fighters feared by the occupiers. Both the Dutch and Japanese authorities suspected the mosque’s activities. Stories tell of Ustaz Burhanuddin a key figure arrested by the Dutch for teaching verses about Jihad. The colonial government strictly forbade translating the Quran into Malay especially passages about holy war.
Despite intense scrutiny Masjid Al Hidayah thrived. Its leaders and congregation cleverly balanced religious teaching with the struggle for Indonesian independence. After independence the mosque expanded steadily every three years. It grew into the permanent structure we see today.
Even during the tumultuous period of the Communist threat Masjid Al Hidayah played a significant role. The congregation actively participated in countering the influence of the PKI. Following the upheaval the mosque continued its work in community building. A major renovation around 1991 modernized the building. It aimed for a two-story structure capable of holding over 2000 worshippers.
