Beneath the Jakarta sun stands Masjid Al-Habib. It is not just a place of prayer. It’s a testament to history and faith. This mosque echoes with stories of the past.
Masjid Al-Habib is also known as Masjid Luar Batang. It is one of Jakarta’s oldest mosques. You will find it in North Jakarta near the Sunda Kelapa Harbor. The mosque’s story began in the 18th century. It is named after Habib Luar Batang. He was a revered Islamic figure. His shrine is also located here.
Let’s journey back to Habib Husein’s time. He was born in Hadhramaut. He migrated to Batavia to preach Islam. Legend says he possessed remarkable abilities. He was once imprisoned. Yet, he miraculously appeared as both prisoner and prayer leader.
Habib Husein passed away in 1756. He was buried within the mosque complex. He is a descendant of the Ba’Alawi sada family. His lineage traces back to Prophet Muhammad.
In 1791, a Chinese explorer named Ong Hoe Hoe visited Batavia. He wrote of a sage in Luar Batang. This sage was known as Nek Bok Seng. He lived simply. He devoted himself to reading and writing. He loved music and chess. Some believe Nek Bok Seng was Habib Husain himself.
Records show the mosque’s construction finished in 1739. Muhammad Arshad al-Banjari corrected the Qibla direction in 1827. The mosque’s orientation wasn’t precisely towards the Kaaba. Some scholars believe it was originally Habib Husein’s residence. He later transformed it into a musolla or mosque.
An article in the Bataviaasche Courant mentioned Masjid Luar Batang in 1827. It noted Habib Husein’s death around 1796. People believed vows made near his tomb were always fulfilled.
The name “Luar Batang” has interesting origins. One story says Habib Husein’s body vanished from its coffin during burial. This happened three times. The community then decided to bury him where the mosque stands today. “Luar Batang” means “body outside the coffin”.
Another version links to the Dutch East India Company. The VOC used wooden beams to control harbor access. Indigenous boats waited “outside the beam” or “Luar Batang”. A village grew there.
In 1739, the VOC gave land to Habib Husein. He was known for his supernatural power. He influenced Muslims in northern Batavia.
Today, Masjid Al-Habib remains a sacred place. It is a cultural heritage site overlooking Sunda Kelapa port.
At the complex entrance stands a white Gapura gate. The mosque itself is square. Inside are two halls. Each hall has 12 poles representing the hours of day and night. The tomb of Habib Husein and his student is located here. Renovations have altered some original features.
