Jakarta’s skyline tells countless stories. But few are as captivating as that of Masjid Al Furqan. Masjid Al Furqan stands proudly in the heart of Jakarta. It’s more than just a place of worship. Masjid Al Furqan is a testament to community spirit and architectural ingenuity. It pulsates with life, drawing in people from all walks.
Masjid Al Furqan isn’t just a building. It is a dynamic hub woven into the very fabric of the city. The original design of Masjid Al Furqan was quite simple. It featured a roof without a dome and a repetitive pattern on the facade. Earth-tone colors and a functional design were reminiscent of the Salman Mosque at ITB. Both mosques were designed by Achmad Noe’man.
However, Masjid Al Furqan underwent a complete transformation in 2004. The renovation modernized the campus. It was funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). The current appearance differs drastically from the original structure. The front of Masjid Al Furqan boasts a spacious parking area. A long corridor, often called a selasar, wraps around the mosque. Four entrances provide access.
The main entrance at the front has separate staircases on the right and left wings. The right wing is exclusively for women (akhwat). The left wing is for men (ikhwan). This separation continues at the back entrance with designated staircases. Inside, the floors are not tiled. They are made of wood, adding a unique touch.
One of the most striking features of Masjid Al Furqan is its roof. It doesn’t have the typical dome seen in most Indonesian mosques. Instead, a prominent calligraphy of the word “Allah” crowns the mosque, reaching the height of surrounding buildings. Masjid Al Furqan has four floors. The ground floor houses student activities, the DKM Mosque management office, the Islamic Tutorial, and ablution facilities. Floors one, two, and three are dedicated to prayer.
The mosque can accommodate over 10,000 worshippers. This makes it one of the largest campus mosques in Indonesia, and even Southeast Asia. In 2004, Rector Fakry Gaffar initiated major renovations across the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia campus. This included the total transformation of Masjid Al Furqan. The project, funded by the Islamic Development Bank, resulted in the grand and magnificent structure we see today. The mosque also became the Islamic Tutorial Center of the university.
Masjid Al Furqan isn’t merely a place for prayer. It serves as a vibrant center for the community. Come, experience the warmth of Masjid Al Furqan. Let its unique story resonate within you.
