Built in 1933 Masjid Al-Barkah in Kampung Bali Matraman Jakarta Selatan stands as a testament to faith. This magnificent mosque wasn’t always so grand. It began as a humble prayer hall a former cowshed. KH Abdullah Syafiie a prominent religious figure and the founder of the As-Syafi’iyah Islamic educational institution was only 23 years old when he started building it.

Masjid Al-Barkah is more than just a place of worship. It’s the heart of the As-Syafi’iyah educational complex. KH Abdullah Syafiie’s vision extended far beyond the mosque walls. His dedication led to the creation of schools ranging from kindergarten to university level. The complex now boasts 63 Islamic educational institutions.

The mosque’s history is deeply intertwined with KH Abdullah Syafiie’s life. His legacy lives on through the thousands of students who have graduated from the As-Syafi’iyah schools. Many now serve as religious leaders throughout Indonesia. The Sunday morning gatherings at Masjid Al-Barkah are a testament to his enduring influence drawing thousands of worshippers.

KH Abdullah Syafiie himself was a unique figure. He masterfully blended the philosophies of two major Islamic movements NU and Muhammadiyah. His political involvement included campaigning for the Masyumi party in the 1955 elections. He passed away on September 3 1985. He was given a grand funeral attended by tens of thousands. He is remembered for his gentleness his tireless work for the community and his commitment to Islamic education.
