A whisper of history clings to these ancient walls. Welcome to Masjid Al-Barkah a hidden gem in Jakarta’s bustling Kemang district.

This unassuming mosque stands as a testament to faith perseverance and a story spanning over two centuries. Built in 1818 by Guru Sinin a revered figure believed to be a wali from Banten Masjid Al-Barkah has quietly witnessed Jakarta’s transformation.

Imagine the challenges Guru Sinin faced. He built this mosque on swampy land a meter deep. Obtaining permits from the Dutch colonial government must have been arduous. Early construction relied on humble materials like coconut tree trunks and rumbia leaves. The mosque’s initial structure was simple a far cry from what you see today.

Over time the community rallied. In 1932 wooden planks replaced the rumbia thatching. Further renovations took place in 1935 1950 1960 and 1970. By 1985 the mosque acquired its current form with ceramic tiles and a corrugated iron roof. The changes reflect the community’s growing prosperity and devotion.

But Masjid Al-Barkah holds more than just architectural intrigue. At the western side you’ll find a cluster of ancient graves. Here lies Guru Sinin himself who passed in 1920. His son-in-law KH Ridi and his grandson KH Naisin also rest here. The graves stand as silent guardians of the mosque’s rich legacy.

Even today many seek blessings at Guru Sinin’s grave. Stories of unusual events swirl around the mosque. One tale recounts how H Ukib a third-generation member of the mosque community claims to have prayed behind Guru Sinin’s spirit.

Masjid Al-Barkah is more than just a place of worship. It is a living archive a vibrant hub and a beacon of faith across generations. It has quietly stood through colonial rule wars and rapid urban expansion. Its story is one of resilience community and the enduring power of faith in the heart of Jakarta.
