Could a mosque hidden amidst Jakarta’s urban hustle hold a secret from 1818? Masjid Al Barakah, tucked away in the vibrant heart of Jakarta, whispers tales of resilience and transformation. Let’s unravel its intriguing story. Masjid Al Barakah isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. While the Masjid Al Barakah we see today in Jakarta might appear modern, its roots stretch back to a time when the area was a marshy landscape. Guru Sinin, a revered figure believed to be a wali from Banten, laid the foundation for this sacred space in 1818. Imagine the scene: a humble structure made of rumbia leaves and coconut tree trunks, a stark contrast to the bustling city that surrounds it now. Building Masjid Al Barakah wasn’t easy. It required navigating complex permissions. Not only did religious leaders need to agree, but the Dutch colonial government also had to give its consent. Over the decades, Masjid Al Barakah in Jakarta underwent a series of transformations. The community rallied together, contributing materials and labor. In 1932, wooden planks replaced the original materials. Slowly but surely, through 1935, 1950, 1960, and 1970, the mosque evolved. By 1985, it had taken on a more contemporary form, with ceramic tiles and an eternit roof. But the true heart of Masjid Al Barakah lies in its hidden gem. Behind the main structure, ancient tombs rest peacefully. Among them is the final resting place of Guru Sinin himself, who passed away in 1920. Other prominent figures from the mosque’s history, including K.H. Ridi and K.H. Naisin, are also buried there. Even in death, Guru Sinin’s presence is felt. Stories circulate of his unique abilities and the blessings he bestowed upon those who sought his guidance. Even today, people visit his tomb, seeking solace and spiritual connection. One intriguing tale involves H. Ukib, a descendant of Guru Sinin, who claimed to have prayed alongside his long-deceased grandfather in a dream. Masjid Al Barakah, a place of worship, a historical landmark, a testament to community, a place where the past whispers to the present.
