Whispers of prayers echoed through the bustling streets of Jakarta, drawing us closer to the majestic Masjid Al Baitul Ma’mur. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a testament to the rich tapestry of Betawi culture intertwined with Islamic faith, a beacon of tradition in a rapidly modernizing world. Masjid Al Baitul Ma’mur stands proudly in the heart of Setu Babakan, a cultural haven in South Jakarta. Originally, a humble musholah stood on this land during the Dutch colonial era, built by Bapak Jaba and the local community. Over time, it transitioned into a mosque, a spiritual anchor for the growing populace. In 1963, the mosque was relocated and rebuilt due to its deteriorating condition. Visionaries like H. Amat, H. Amit, and H. Miat spearheaded this move, reconstructing it on H. Miat’s land and naming it Masjid Jami Al-Falah. The new structure, made of red stone and bamboo walls, embodied the spirit of resilience and community. Further transformations unfolded over the decades. In 1970, the mosque shifted westward and underwent a permanent reconstruction with brick, now standing on 1000 square meters of land, a generous waqf from H. Miat bin H. Buang. However, construction stalled, leaving the project incomplete until 1979. Finally, under the governorship of Tjokropranolo, the Jakarta administration completed the construction. It was then renamed Masjid Baitul Ma’mur, with Ustadz H. Ahmad Suhaimi becoming the first chairman of the DKM. Ustadz Suhaimi, a prominent figure in the community, played an integral role in establishing Masjid Baitul Ma’mur, solidifying its place as a center of worship and community. His legacy of service and devotion continued until his passing in 1997. The leadership then transitioned to H.A. Rachmat S., who guided the community until his own passing in 2002. Following his death, the mosque was once again rebuilt by the Jakarta administration, culminating in its rededication in December 2004. It was then, through communal consensus, that the name was elevated to Masjid Raya Baitul Ma’mur. Today, Masjid Al Baitul Ma’mur stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Betawi people. Its distinctive architectural features, such as the ‘langkan’ (terraced boundary fence), ‘gigi balang’ (decorative eaves), and unique roof design, echo the rich cultural heritage of the region. It’s more than just a place of worship. Masjid Al Baitul Ma’mur is a living museum, a vibrant center for cultural preservation amidst the relentless tide of globalization.
