“Ever wonder where mascots go after the game?” That’s a question many ask and the Mascot Hall of Fame answers. Here in Whiting Indiana we celebrate the unsung heroes of sports and communities. The Mascot Hall of Fame is more than just a building. It is a testament to the impact these characters have on our culture.

Founded by David Raymond, the original Phillie Phanatic, the Mascot Hall of Fame started as an online hall in 2005. Raymond dreamed of a place to honor these performers. In 2014, Whiting Indiana became the Hall’s permanent home. The dream became reality on December 26, 2018 when the educational STEAM based museum opened.

To be eligible for the Mascot Hall of Fame a mascot must exist for at least 10 years. They must impact their sport and community. They also need to inspire fans and deliver memorable performances. Each year mascots are nominated and elected by a committee. This committee is made up of performers sports executives and mascot community members. Public online voting contributes to the final tally.

Inside the Mascot Hall of Fame you will find exhibits dedicated to famous mascots. There is Benny the Bull from the Chicago Bulls and Tommy Hawk from the Chicago Blackhawks. Others include Aubie from Auburn University and Bucky Badger from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. These mascots represent the spirit and energy of their teams.

The Mascot Hall of Fame is interactive. It offers exhibits for children. The museum uses Science Technology Engineering Art and Math principles. Kids can learn about mascot design. They can also explore the physics of mascot performances. It’s educational and fun for all ages.

Unfortunately the Mascot Hall of Fame in Whiting closed on September 14 2024. But the organization continues online. They are actively seeking a new location. The dream of a physical Hall of Fame is not over.

The Mascot Hall of Fame drew visitors from all over the country. People came for induction ceremonies and mascot appearances. Despite local support the Hall of Fame struggled to attract visitors from the greater Chicago area. The founder hopes to find a location that can draw significant traffic.

So while its time in Whiting has ended the spirit of the Mascot Hall of Fame lives on. It reminds us of the joy and inspiration that mascots bring to our lives. Keep an eye out. The Mascot Hall of Fame may appear in a new city soon.
