Dive into a tale of traffic diversions and future tunnels. The story of the Marymount Flyover is more than just concrete and asphalt.

The Marymount Flyover stands in Upper Thomson. It will be closed from October 8. This closure facilitates construction on the North-South Corridor road tunnel. A section of this tunnel will run underneath the flyover.

The Land Transport Authority announced that the flyover will reopen in 2029. This is when the road tunnel construction finishes. Motorists along Marymount Road will be diverted. They will use a new road with a signalised junction. This junction intersects with Braddell Road.

This change means an extra five to ten minutes of travel time during peak hours. If you are heading towards Ang Mo Kio or the city, continue along the new road. It handles traffic in both directions. To get to Serangoon via Marymount Road, turn left near Raffles Institution onto Braddell Road. There will be no change for those on Braddell Road toward MacRitchie or Serangoon.

The LTA advises drivers to slow down. Look out for signs to guide you through the diversion. The authority will monitor traffic and make adjustments if needed. The North-South Corridor’s 8.8km viaduct from Admiralty Road West to Lentor Avenue is set to open in 2027. The remaining 12.3km of road tunnels will be completed in 2029. This includes the segment under the Marymount Flyover. Once ready, the corridor will ease traffic on the Central Expressway. It will also help major arterial roads nearby.

An existing bus stop on Marymount Road will be relocated slightly. This affects bus services 54 and 851 towards Ang Mo Kio. The bus services and routes will not change. The existing staircases at Marymount Flyover will be closed. Pedestrians can use the footpath along the new road.

Video editor Peter Pang said the closure could cause heavier jams. He noted the flyover and surrounding roads are already busy. Without this shortcut between Bishan and the city, he would take the train. This avoids potential congestion. Former project officer Adrian Chia predicts traffic will worsen significantly. He used to drive from Bishan to Alexandra for work. He expects more than the usual 15-minute jams during rush hour.

The Marymount Flyover closure is temporary. It is a necessary step for a better transportation network. While there might be short-term inconveniences, the long-term benefits are clear. Smoother traffic and better connectivity are coming. So, next time you pass this area, remember this story of transformation. The Marymount Flyover is not just a flyover. It is a key part of Singapore’s evolving infrastructure.
