Picture this. You’re standing before Mary Seat of Wisdom Church in Park Ridge Illinois a stunning red brick Romanesque structure. Its gray stone trim catches the light. The traditional tile roof hints at a rich history.

This isn’t just any church. Mary Seat of Wisdom is a vital part of Park Ridge’s story. It began as a response to the booming post-war Catholic population. The original St Paul of the Cross Church was overflowing. More space was desperately needed.

The construction of Mary Seat of Wisdom Church between 1951 and 1953 represents a significant chapter in the community’s growth. It wasn’t easy. A massive fundraising drive was launched. Parishioners from St Paul of the Cross generously contributed. Many donated in memory of loved ones. They poured their hearts and their savings into this beautiful building.

The finest materials were used. Magnificent Italian marble adorns the main altar. White marble statues of Our Lady and St Joseph stand proudly at the side altars. The stained-glass windows are breathtaking. They depict historical scriptural events and the symbols of the saints. Imagine the skill and devotion that went into crafting each one. The Stations of the Cross are exquisite oil paintings. They’re replicas from St Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein.

The church wasn’t built in isolation. It was part of a larger expansion of St Paul of the Cross parish. A new school was added in 1950 four more rooms in 1955. By 1956 the existing rather dilapidated rectory was replaced. This is a testament to the enduring faith and commitment of this community.

The cost of building Mary Seat of Wisdom was approximately $900000 a substantial sum at that time. The debt was significant and fundraising continued for years. But the parishioners persevered. Their dedication shines in the church’s beautiful design and construction.

This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith. To community. And to the enduring spirit of those who built Mary Seat of Wisdom Church. It stands as a beacon of hope and faith a symbol of the enduring strength of the Catholic community in Park Ridge. A place of worship and a source of pride for generations to come.
