Did you know that the story of Mary Help of Christians Parish Church in Manila begins far beyond the city limits? It stretches back to 19th-century Italy. Here we stand before a testament to faith. It echoes devotion across continents.
This parish is more than just a building. It represents a vibrant community. Its roots intertwine with the story of the Salesians of Don Bosco. They are a religious order dedicated to education and service.
Let’s journey back. We go back to Italy. St. John Bosco felt called to honor Mary. He wanted to invoke her under the title Help of Christians. This call led to the construction of a basilica in Turin. It became a center for devotion.
The devotion soon spread worldwide. It reached the Philippines through Archbishop William Piani. He served as Apostolic Delegate in the early 20th century. Piani passionately promoted Mary Help of Christians. He even convinced many bishops to choose her as a secondary patroness.
In 1922, Archbishop Piani arrived in Manila. He brought a statue of Mary Help of Christians. It was a gift. Blessed Philip Rinaldi sent it. The statue first resided in the Apostolic Delegation House in Malate. Later it was moved to a chapel in the Manila Cathedral.
During World War II, the statue faced danger. Msgr Cesar Ma Guerrero moved it for safekeeping. He entrusted it to Rev Fr Jose Pamintuan. He was the parish priest of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora de Loreto. This was in Sampaloc Manila.
Amidst bombings and destruction, the statue survived. Some old ladies found it. It was behind the devastated Sampaloc Church. They recognized it as Mary Help of Christians. They cared for the image.
After the war, a pious group formed. It was called the Maria Auxiliadora Association. They promoted devotion to Mary. They offered votive masses every 24th of the month.
The Salesians arrived in the Philippines in 1951. They were surprised to find existing devotion to Mary Help of Christians. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians also arrived. They helped spread the devotion further.
The Salesians wanted a bigger sanctuary in Metro Manila. In 1972, Archbishop Carmine Rocco laid the cornerstone. It was on land donated by the Serrano and Dolor families. This was in Better Living Subdivision Parañaque.
In 1975, the Parish of Mary Help of Christians was officially established. Jaime Cardinal Sin inaugurated it. In 1985, the church gained the title of National Shrine.
In 1994, the original statue of Mary Help of Christians returned. It came from the Loreto Church. It was placed in the National Shrine for veneration.
In 2022, the image received a Pontifical Coronation. In 2024, the Shrine gained a special bond with the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.
Today, the devotion to Mary Help of Christians continues to spread. It is spread through the Salesians and devoted followers. Her feast day is celebrated every May 24th. Pilgrims visit her shrine constantly.
