Gazing upon the Mary Help of Christians Chapel, one can almost hear the echoes of prayers and hymns. This sacred space, nestled within the bustling city of Parañaque, holds a rich history intertwined with the Salesian order and the deep devotion to Mary Help of Christians in the Philippines. The story of Mary Help of Christians Chapel begins long before its physical construction, with the arrival of Archbishop William Piani, a Salesian, in 1922. He brought with him a statue of Mary Help of Christians, a gift from Blessed Philip Rinaldi, then Rector Major of the Salesians. This statue, initially placed in the Apostolic Delegation House in Malate and later enthroned in the Manila Cathedral, became the seed of a burgeoning devotion. The image fostered a growing reverence for Mary Help of Christians, not only in Manila but throughout the Philippines. Decades later, in 1942, amidst the turmoil of World War II, the statue found refuge in Our Lady of Loreto Church in Sampaloc, Manila, a testament to the enduring faith even in times of conflict. The dream of a dedicated shrine for Mary Help of Christians in Metro Manila began to take shape. The cornerstone of the Mary Help of Christians Chapel was laid in 1972 in Better Living Subdivision, Parañaque. The construction, a labor of love and devotion, culminated in the consecration of the church in 1976. The Mary Help of Christians Chapel wasn’t just a building; it became a spiritual home, a place where the glory of Mary Help of Christians could shine forth. The chapel officially became the Parish of Mary Help of Christians in 1975. It later reached a significant milestone in 1985 when it was designated as a National Shrine, solidifying its importance as a center of devotion for the entire country. The very same statue that Archbishop Piani brought to the Philippines in 1922, after its journey through Manila Cathedral and Our Lady of Loreto Church, finally found its permanent home within the walls of the Mary Help of Christians Chapel in 1994. In 2022, a century after its arrival in the Philippines, the statue received a canonical coronation, a beautiful affirmation of the enduring devotion to Mary Help of Christians. The Mary Help of Christians Chapel stands as a beacon of faith. It serves as a reminder of the powerful intercession of Mary, Help of Christians, and the unwavering devotion of the Filipino people.
