“Ready for some disc golf?” Marx Meadow offers more than just a grassy expanse. It is a delightful picnic spot nestled in Golden Gate Park. The Marx Meadow stretches invitingly. It is a centrally located grassy stretch perfect for relaxation.

Marx Meadow sits on the north side of JFK Drive near 26th Avenue. You will see a sign at the entrance facing JFK Drive. The Golden Gate Park Disc Golf Course surrounds Marx Meadow. You might even want to make your party part of the fun.

This area is named after Johanna Marx. She was a Napa resident who bequeathed money to the park. Her contribution ensures its upkeep for all to enjoy.

Let’s talk about picnics. Marx Meadow has five individually reservable picnic areas. Each area includes one or two tables. If you have a large party of 100 or more consider renting a few tables nearby. Each table also has its own BBQ grill. Reservations are available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

You can bring beer and wine. However kegs and liquor are not allowed. Open alcoholic beverages outside the picnic area are never permitted. Feel free to bring inflatable play structures with an extra permit. Electricity is not provided.

Closest restrooms are across JFK Drive at Hellman Hollow. Parking is available on the street with limited availability. Remember to reserve your corner of Marx Meadow today.

The picnic tables border a shared grassy area. There is small shared space for lawn games.

Marx Meadow is closed for annual restoration and maintenance. This occurs from November through March. Reservations become available again starting in April.

Originally, the site of Marx Meadow was a speedway. Carriage races occurred here in the late 1800s. Now, this meadow hosts large-scale events. These events include Outside Lands and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. It is part of Golden Gate Park’s vast chain of meadows. You can find it near Fulton Street and the 25th Avenue park entrance. It’s a sloping bowl of lawn bordered by the Disc Golf Course on two sides.

So, as you relax and enjoy the atmosphere of Marx Meadow, remember its history. It began as a speedway. Later, Johanna Marx helped transform it into the picnic spot we cherish today. Enjoy your time here. Perhaps even try your hand at disc golf.
