Right here at the Martyrs’ Monument, we remember a powerful story of faith. This monument commemorates the Oxford Martyrs. These leaders faced death for their Protestant beliefs.

The Martyrs’ Memorial commemorates three prominent Protestant leaders. They are Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, and Hugh Latimer. These men died during Queen Mary’s reign. She sought to reverse the Protestant Reformation.

Imagine Oxford in the 1550s. Queen Mary I wanted to restore Catholic worship. These three bishops stood firm in their Protestant faith. They were arrested and tried for heresy.

The trial occurred at the University Church. You can still see where a pillar was cut. It supported the platform where the bishops stood. They refused to renounce their beliefs.

Ridley and Latimer were burned at the stake on October 16, 1555. The execution site was just outside the city wall. Ridley suffered greatly because the gunpowder failed to ignite properly.

Cranmer was forced to watch. Initially, he recanted his Protestant beliefs. But before his execution, he rejected his recantation. He denounced the Pope. Cranmer held his hand in the flames. It was the hand that signed the false statement.

The city of Oxford had to pay for the bishops’ imprisonment. Records show the cost of wood to burn Cranmer was charged to his account.

The Martyrs’ Monument was erected in 1841. Public subscriptions funded it. It was a statement against growing neo-Catholic sentiments. The Anglican Church feared movements towards Catholic worship.

Sir George Gilbert Scott designed the memorial. He also rebuilt St Mary Magdalen Church nearby. The design resembles the Eleanor Crosses. These crosses were built by King Edward I. They honored his wife.

Look closely at the statues. Henry Weekes carved them from Caen stone. Latimer faces west with crossed arms. Ridley faces east. Cranmer holds a Bible facing north.

The inscription reads about the glory of God. It remembers Cranmer, Ridley, and Latimer. They died for their beliefs against the Church of Rome.

The Martyrs’ Memorial fell into disrepair. It was fully restored in 2003. The monument stands as a reminder. It shows the cost of religious conviction. It stands as a testament to courage.
