The Martinuskirche isn’t your typical church building. It began life in 1665 as a farmhouse. Hans Heitmans and Anna Meyer built “House Number 1” a magnificent two-post structure. They carved a message above the entrance. In Low German it lamented the unexpected cost of the build. The farmhouse later fell into disrepair.
Fast forward to the 1980s. Deutsch Evern needed a church. The growing community worshipped in the school or cemetery chapel. Then Pastor Christian G Schnabel spotted the dilapidated farmhouse. He saw its potential. He envisioned the Martinuskirche.
Moving a historic building is no easy feat. It involved community effort and significant debate. But with careful planning and dedicated volunteers they moved House Number 1. They moved it 300 meters. They carefully deconstructed and reconstructed it. Amazingly 80% of the original wood was reused.
Inside the Martinuskirche the altar area stands out. Famous church designer Friedrich Press crafted it. He used simple wooden sculptures. He chose to represent Law and Gospel themes.
