A weathered stone whispers tales of centuries. This is Martinskirche Schiffdorf a church steeped in history near Bremerhaven. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

The Martinskirche Schiffdorf may have roots stretching back to 1235. A knight possibly commissioned its construction. Records from 1420 confirm its existence then called the capella in Schipdorf. This makes the Martinskirche Schiffdorf potentially one of the oldest brick churches along the Lower Weser River.

The church’s single nave or hall church design is striking. The chancel boasts an early Gothic ribbed vault. The nave’s pointed arches hint at a Romanesque origin. The soaring stonework dates back to the 14th century. Later a defensive tower was added to the west side. Robust buttresses were affixed to the north and south sides around 1750. A ship replaced the original weather vane in 1838. A globe and cross were added in 1985.

Inside a winged altarpiece commands attention. It features three rows of images depicting the Passion of Christ. It likely originates from the late 15th century. The altar table was rebuilt in 1955. It incorporates an old gravestone. A medieval baptismal font has graced the church since 1986. Neo-Gothic style galleries were added in 1908. The church’s 14-register 1096-pipe organ built by the Hammer firm in Hanover in 1958 is a marvel. Herbert Brust served as organist from 1945 to 1965.

The Martinskirche Schiffdorf’s bells ring out with history. A bell cast in 1635 was requisitioned for war in 1942. It was returned in 1949 and repurposed as the main bell. Another bell cast in Stade in 1701 still tolls. A large bell from 1460 met a similar fate. The largest and smallest bells were recast by Rincker in 1961.

The Martinskirche Schiffdorf continues to serve its community. Its past echoes in every stone. Its future is intertwined with the lives it touches. This is a place of quiet contemplation and living history. A place where the whispers of the past blend harmoniously with the present.
