Did Landgrave Karl ever imagine his private sanctuary becoming a public spectacle? Here at the Marmorbad in Kassel, we unravel a tale of luxury and art. The Marmorbad is Germany’s last important preserved Baroque bath complex. It was built between 1722 and 1728 under Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel. This wasn’t just a place to bathe. The Marmorbad showcased the Landgrave’s opulence and artistic taste. The Italian sculptor, Pierre Etienne Monnot, crafted the magnificent interior. Marvel at the marble sculptures and wall reliefs depicting scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Notice the medallions. They bear the portraits of Landgrave Karl and his wife, Landgravine Marie Amalie of Courland. A popular story claims that Jérôme Bonaparte, Napoleon’s brother, once bathed in red wine here. This tale, however, is likely fiction. The Marmorbad, a “show bath” with no drainage, served as a venue for lavish parties, especially during Jérôme Bonaparte’s reign. The red wine story, though untrue, adds to the mystique of “König Lustik,” Jérôme’s nickname. The Marmorbad in Kassel remains a testament to Baroque artistry. It offers a glimpse into a world of extravagance. Visit the Marmorbad between April 1st and October 31st to experience its splendor.
