Ever wonder how Quito got its modern gateway to the world? The story of Mariscal Sucre International Airport is more than just runways and terminals. It’s a tale of necessity innovation and a dash of daring.

Mariscal Sucre International Airport serves as the bustling hub for Ecuador’s capital city. It is located in Tababela. Many locals call it Tababela Airport because of this location.

Before this modern facility there was another airport also named Mariscal Sucre International Airport. That airport served Quito for 53 years. The old airport faced a major problem. Its location in the middle of a mountainous city made expansion impossible. Larger aircrafts could not be accommodated. Air traffic increased so much that a new airport was needed. The old airport had seen many incidents over the years. The new Mariscal Sucre International Airport was built to solve these issues.

Construction began in 2006. It was not until February 20 2013 that the new airport opened. The first flight arrived from Guayaquil. Another flight came from Lima Peru. Both flights were scheduled to arrive in the morning. The new airport was named after Antonio José de Sucre. He was a leader in the fight for independence.

Covering 1500 hectares the airport is ten times larger than its predecessor. Its location on the Oyambaro plain offered room to grow and improve safety. The location was carefully chosen.

Did you know that Mariscal Sucre International Airport was the first 5-star airport in the Western Hemisphere? Skytrax gave it this rating. This shows its commitment to high standards.

In 2012 a special flight tested the new airport’s systems. Quito’s mayor and about 100 passengers flew from the old airport to the new one. The flight lasted only nine minutes. A water cannon salute greeted the plane upon arrival.

Today Mariscal Sucre International Airport continues to grow. In 2022 it served around 4.3 million passengers. It connects Quito with many destinations. These destinations include Panama City Bogota and Madrid. The airport is a key hub for Avianca Ecuador and LATAM Ecuador.

The story of Mariscal Sucre International Airport is one of progress. It shows how Quito embraced the future. From its daring beginnings to its current status the airport embodies the spirit of innovation. As you pass through its gates remember the history. Think about the visionaries who made this vital link to the world possible.
