Tucked away on the corner of High Road and Plainfield Road, Marion Hills Bible Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It’s not just a building, but a “little white church” with a rich history. Marion Hills Bible Church officially began its journey in 1952 as a Sunday school led by Rev. William Shunk in the basement of Lace-Marion Hills School. Arthur D. Pelzer soon took the helm, and the fledgling congregation, incorporated as Marion Hills Sunday School in 1953, purchased land for a mere $1,000. Construction began in August 1954, fueled by donations from Cicero Bible Church and the sweat equity of community volunteers. Marion Hills Bible Church held its first service on January 1, 1956, with Mr. Pelzer as Pastor. The official dedication followed on May 6th, 1956. The church grew, adding a bell tower in 1959 and new pews later on. Today, the church is led by Reverends Matthew Grider and Larry Banaszak. Their stories are intertwined with Marion Hills Bible Church. Matt and Faith Grider met at the church in 1990 and married four years later. Both educators, they share a passion for youth ministry. Larry and Denise Banaszak, high school sweethearts married in 1978, have a long history of service at Cicero Bible Church before joining Marion Hills. The church also benefits from the wisdom of Karen Bacon, Ministry Advisor, and the organizational skills of Denise Banaszak as Building/Financial Director. Faith Grider serves as Missions Director. Marion Hills Bible Church’s core belief is simple: “Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory.” They believe in the power of community, the importance of spiritual growth, and the transformative message of Jesus Christ. They offer Sunday School, morning and evening worship, a Wednesday prayer night, and monthly fellowship meetings. So, next time you pass this “little white church,” remember the dedicated individuals who built it, brick by brick, and the enduring faith that continues to fill its walls.
