“Haven for the wealthy.” That’s how Marine Parade was known in the early to mid-20th century. Today, we explore this vibrant planning area and residential estate in Singapore. Marine Parade acts as a buffer between the Central and East regions. It sits on the southeastern coast of Pulau Ujong.

Marine Parade’s story is closely linked to Katong. This area became a hub for the Peranakan community. Straits Chinese culture flourished here. A unique architectural style developed. Even the famous Katong Laksa originated here.

Today, Marine Parade features many HDB flats. These were built in the 1970s. This followed land reclamation along the east coast. Now, many private condominiums are also present.

The main public housing area has 58 blocks of HDB flats. Still Road South cuts through the estate. It connects to the East Coast Parkway. This highway leads to the city and Changi Airport.

Getting around Marine Parade is easy. The Thomson-East Coast Line serves the area. You can find the Marine Parade and Marine Terrace MRT stations here.

The Marine Parade Community Building used to be a local hub. It was completed in 2000. The building housed the Marine Parade Community Club. It also housed the Marine Parade Public Library. A theatrette a gymnasium and sports hall were also in the building. The building is currently undergoing a major upgrade.

Marine Parade boasts a town center called Marine Parade Promenade. Here, you’ll find neighbourhood shops and Parkway Centre. Parkway Parade, a commercial complex, is also located here. It offers offices and a shopping mall.

Several schools are located in Marine Parade. Among them are CHIJ Katong Primary, Ngee Ann Primary School, Tao Nan School and Haig Girls’ School.

Marine Parade is part of the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency. This constituency elects five members to Parliament. Goh Chok Tong, a former Prime Minister, represented Marine Parade until 2020. Minister Tan See Leng succeeded him as the MP.

So, Marine Parade has evolved over the years. From a haven for the wealthy to a modern residential estate. It continues to be a vibrant part of Singapore. Its rich history and modern amenities create a unique blend. This makes Marine Parade a special place to live and visit.
