Hidden amongst the upscale residences of Bonn’s Rüngsdorf district stands the Marienkapelle a small but significant chapel. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history and a surprising story of devotion resilience and even theft.

Built around 1800 the Marienkapelle’s origins remain shrouded in mystery. The identity of its founder is unknown. The chapel is dedicated to the veneration of Mary mother of Jesus. Locally it’s affectionately known as Et Kapellsche. For a long time it served as a pilgrimage site for nearby villages. Even today the chapel open during daylight hours sees regular visits from worshippers. Devotees continue to leave votive tablets in honour of the Virgin Mary.

One fascinating detail about the Marienkapelle involves a medieval wooden statue. Discovered during a 1972 restoration this Rüngsdorf Madonna a finely crafted figure about 50 centimeters tall was originally believed to be a simple chapel piece. However its resemblance to the Xanten Madonna in St Viktor in Xanten a piece created by Dries Holthuys in 1496 hints at a far more significant artistic heritage. Due to its value the statue was moved for safekeeping to the St Andreas parish church. Its place in the Marienkapelle was taken by another Madonna figure.

The Marienkapelle has faced its share of challenges. In the late 20th century the building underwent essential repairs and was designated a protected monument. Later on thanks to the initiative of Rüngsdorf residents led by Josef Weiβ the surrounding area was redesigned creating a small forecourt that beautifully showcases the chapel at the heart of a crossroads. Even the interior was lovingly renovated by a local company as a gift to the community in 2012.

Yet the chapel’s story isn’t without its darker moments. The Madonna statue was repeatedly targeted by thieves. In incidents in 2008 2010 and 2012 attempts to steal jewellery and even the statue itself resulted in damage to the protective glass casing. In one brazen act a small plastic foetus was thrown into the display case. Despite these setbacks the Marienkapelle stands as a testament to faith and the enduring spirit of its community. It is a small place of worship but its history is huge and full of interesting anecdotes. Its story shows faith and the importance of protecting history and heritage. It is one not to be missed on your visit to Bonn.
