Picture the scene a farmhouse a windmill standing proudly against the Aarhus sky. This is Marie Mølle. Built in 1855 by Christen Jensen Brødbech it played a vital role in the life of Vejlby. Imagine the rhythmic swoosh of its sails the steady grinding of its machinery. Marie Mølle wasn’t just a windmill it was a hub a heart beating with the rhythm of rural life.

A violent storm raged in 1861. It ripped the windmill’s wings from their moorings. The miller’s heart must have sunk. The storm though devastating marked a turning point. The damaged windmill was sold for 23000 kr to baker P Meyer. His son Otto took over in 1875. Carl his son followed in 1919. The family’s legacy was woven into the very fabric of Marie Mølle.

For years Marie Mølle’s flour was essential. A daily milk wagon even delivered from its doorstep to Aarhus. Children especially benefited from this fresh supply. They depended on Marie Mølle for nourishment and growth. Think of the countless loaves the endless jugs of milk that it produced. These fed families creating memories.

The 1950s brought another change. Johannes Madsen ran the mill until his death in 1953. His son Jens carried on the tradition. It was a family business spanning generations. Their commitment to Marie Mølle was unwavering. They were the guardians of its history.

Sadly the final chapter unfolded in 1964. The mill’s buildings were demolished. A large laundry Kring Vask replaced Marie Mølle. Houses sprang up across the landscape. Yet the legacy of Marie Mølle endures. Many of its internal parts especially its machinery were preserved and donated to the National Museum. The story of Marie Mølle echoes through time a testament to its role in the Aarhus landscape.
