Have you ever quenched your thirst from a well steeped in history? Before you stands the Mária remetei Szentkút a holy well in Budapest. This isn’t just any well. It’s a place where faith and history intertwine. Legend whispers of King Matthias quenching his thirst here during a hunt. He exclaimed “This is cold water” giving Pesthidegkút its name.

The Mária remetei Szentkút is more than a simple well. It’s a focal point of the Mária remete pilgrimage site. Built in 1938 it commemorates the 900th anniversary of Saint Stephen’s offering to the Virgin Mary. The well’s structure is quite striking. It features a three-figure sculpture group. The Virgin Mary and Saint Stephen are depicted sharing this sacred water. Pilgrims drink from its four spouts.

The site itself is rich in history. In 1740 a young Swiss girl Katalin Thalweiser brought a copy of a Mary shrine painting from Einsiedeln. She hung it on a tree praying before it. Soon others joined her their prayers answered. One person even regained their sight praying before this picture. This led to the construction of the Little Holy Mary Church. A testament to the unwavering faith of the community. Pope Pius X granted the site full indulgences in 1907. It’s a significant stop on the Elő Rózsafazarándok pilgrimage. The main indulgence is celebrated on the feasts of the Assumption and the Little Holy Mary.

The Mária remetei Szentkút is also adorned with a bas-relief. In the center is Mary with the baby Jesus. Two angels flank them in prayer. The entire scene evokes a sense of peace and serenity. The outdoor altar nearby holds a replica of a Marian statue from Lourdes. It was a gift from the bishop of Lourdes. It marks the 100th anniversary of the Lourdes apparition. The altar base lists 42 Marian sanctuaries. The statue itself stands on a rock from Lourdes.

So here you are standing before the Mária remetei Szentkút. Feel the weight of history. Reflect on the centuries of prayers and answered wishes. Take a moment. Imagine the countless pilgrims who have come before you seeking solace and renewal. This holy well is more than just water. It’s a living testament to faith hope and the enduring power of prayer. Drink in the story. Drink from the well.
