Lost in a dolomite gorge a sacred secret rests. This is Mária-kép a place where nature and faith intertwine. Let me tell you about Mária-kép and its surroundings.

Imagine a trail marked with a red M. This is Mária Gorge’s special trail a rare honour for a gorge. Mária-kép nestles at the gorge’s lowest point at Mária Rock.

Mária-kép and Mária Rock reside north of the Buda Hills’ Csíki Hills. Water carved this gorge from the dolomite mass forming the hills. Impressive dolomite rocks tower above creating a stunning sight.

The Queen of Angels Church is nearby. This Budakeszi church is a centuries-old pilgrimage site. Several paths of the Way of Mary pass through here. A green M marks one such path through the gorge.

Under Communist rule Mária Gorge was renamed Meteor Gorge. The Virgin Mary’s memory was erased. Sadly part of Mária Rock was blown up. This led to its collapse. A carcass pit was dug to deter visitors. The air became unpleasant.

Today visitors can see the restored relics of Mary on the rock. They stand in their former glory. They complement the sacred church nearby and the area’s holy character. The eastern entrance is marred by a scrap car heap. Hopefully it will be removed soon.

The rock formation is worth a closer look. It is a dignified rock sprawling at the gorge’s western end. Ivy densely covers the forest around it.

The valley walls are steep. Winter sunlight barely reaches the bottom. Summer stays cooler due to the dense forest. This creates a special microclimate.

Mosses lichens and ferns cling to the 30-metre-high rock walls. They offer a unique view especially in autumn. Beech trees are unusual at these low elevations. They mix with other species here.

A ridgeline south of the gorge features rock formations. Few hikers venture here. Grassy rock outcroppings form. Bear’s-foot yellow foxglove adonis and pasqueflower bloom here. Turk’s cap lilies add beauty. Sempervivum and Sesleria sadleriana also thrive. These plants show how flora and fungi change drastically. This is due to small climate variations.

Several painter’s brick caves dot the area. One is in the canyon’s east. Mária-kép is ideal for eye-catching sights. It appeals to old pilgrimage seekers. It even attracts biodiversity hunters.

Budakeszi plans to add information boards in cooperation with the National Park. The gorge and surroundings are worth visiting in any season. So take your time and enjoy this remarkable location.
