The Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ is a truly unique institution, standing tall on Drummond Crescent in the Somers Town area of Camden. This school has a rich history that spans centuries. It all began in 1830, when the Faithful Companions of Jesus, founded by Marie-Madeleine d’Houët, took over a struggling industrial school. The school, originally named after St. Aloysius, was supported by charitable donations from wealthy gentlemen in the area. Over the years, it evolved from an industrial school to a convent boarding school, then to a day school with pupils of mixed ability, and eventually, to a selective non-fee paying grammar school. In 1974, Maria Fidelis Comprehensive School came into existence as a result of a merger with St. Vincent’s Secondary School, which was run by the Sisters of Charity. The name Maria Fidelis was chosen because of the deep devotion both religious congregations had to Our Lady. The girls’ school transformed into a co-educational institution in 2013 and its motto, aptly chosen as ‘Fidelity’, resonates throughout the halls. The school’s location was once threatened by the planned route of the High Speed 2 rail network. However, the school was able to secure a new site on Drummond Crescent, just a short distance from its previous location. The new school building was completed in 2019, and its modern, stylish architecture echoes the school’s commitment to progress while staying true to its rich heritage. The Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ is a testament to the strength and adaptability of its founding principles, as well as a testament to the perseverance and dedication of generations of students, teachers, and staff. These qualities, coupled with a dedication to excellence, make it a thriving, inspiring, and cherished institution.
