Born into privilege, Margarethe Blarer defied expectations. Here, at the Margarethe Blarer Plaque, we celebrate a woman who chose service over societal norms. The Margarethe Blarer Plaque stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment to her community. Konstanz in 1494 witnessed the birth of a remarkable woman. She was born into the city’s elite, daughter of a prominent merchant and councilman, Augustin Blarer. Instead of embracing a life of leisure, Margarethe dedicated herself to the welfare of others. Educated in the humanist tradition, Margarethe Blarer’s sharp intellect was evident in her theological studies and interactions with reformers like Martin Bucer. She even corresponded with the renowned scholar, Erasmus of Rotterdam. She used her family’s wealth, derived from the linen trade, to fund her charitable works. This allowed her brothers, Ambrosius and Thomas, to pursue their religious callings without financial worry. Margarete Blarer founded a charitable association for Christian women in Konstanz. She became known as the “Servant of the Church of Konstanz,” a testament to her tireless work with the sick, the poor, and the displaced. When the plague ravaged Konstanz in 1541, Margarethe Blarer did not hesitate. She transformed the island monastery into a hospital and tirelessly cared for the afflicted. Tragically, her selfless dedication led to her contracting the plague, and she passed away at the age of 47. The Margarethe Blarer Plaque reminds us that true nobility lies not in birthright, but in selfless service. Her legacy continues to inspire generations to embrace compassion and dedicate themselves to the betterment of their communities.
