Her gaze, though cast in bronze and fiberglass, seems to pierce the air, doesn’t it? This is Marcelisa, a sculpture both imposing and surprisingly graceful. Marcelisa has graced the grounds of Slotshaven since October 1996. Prince Henrik, captivated by her abstract beauty, purchased her during a trip to Italy, the home of her creator, Miguel Ortiz Berrocal. She’s a hefty lady, weighing in at 1,700 kilos! But Berrocal, a master of his craft, designed her to appear as if floating. He achieved this illusion by placing Marcelisa, forever reclining, on a pedestal of hardened glass. Interestingly, Marcelisa is part of a trio. She has two sister sculptures, each bearing the title ‘Nudes in the Landscapes’. One graces Bordeaux, named Petita, and the other, Alcudia, resides in Valencia. Each one unique, yet all sharing that ethereal quality Berrocal masterfully brought to life.
