What if I told you a church in Singapore started not with missionaries, but with everyday folks? This is the story of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in Singapore, nestled on Jalan Keli. The Mar Thoma Syrian Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the resilience of the Malayali diaspora who, arriving in Singapore as early as 1910, carried their faith with them. Imagine early Singapore, a hub for rubber plantations and bustling ports. Syrian Christians, a small but determined community, began holding prayer meetings in their homes, seeds of a future church. The first Mar Thoma service, following the traditional order, took place in Klang’s Jubilee School. Soon, regular services were held in Kuala Lumpur’s Penuel High School, led by K. G. Mathew. The community’s desire for a resident priest echoed back to India, where the Mar Thoma Church heard their call. In 1936, Rev. T.N. Koshy arrived, a pivotal moment for the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in Singapore. He journeyed across Malaya and Singapore, nurturing the growing Syrian Christian community. This marked the first Mar Thoma parish outside India, a beacon of faith in a new land. Even during the tumultuous years of the Japanese Occupation, the dream of a dedicated church building took root. A piece of land was purchased in Kuala Lumpur, a bold act of faith during uncertain times. After the war, more Syrian Christians arrived, drawn by opportunities in various sectors. Rev. V.E. Thomas, who had served during the war, returned after his ordination in 1947, further strengthening the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in Singapore. A milestone was reached in 1953, when the first three Mar Thoma church buildings in Malaya and Singapore were consecrated, including one dedicated to St. Thomas in Singapore itself. The Mar Thoma Syrian Church continued to flourish. Rev. T.N. Koshy, instrumental in its growth, was named Vicar-General for Malaya in 1958. By 1962, with Malaya’s independence and the increasing number of parishes, the Diocese of Malaysia and Singapore was formed, solidifying the presence of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in the region. Today, the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in Singapore stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of a community, their faith woven into the fabric of this vibrant nation. It’s a story of humble beginnings, unwavering faith, and a church built not by missionaries, but by the people, for the people.
