Maple Grove started as Winnebago Indian territory. The natives were relocated from Wisconsin by the federal government. In 1851, Louis Gervais arrived here. He settled in this area. Maple Grove has a council with a mayor and four members. They all serve four-year terms. Mark Steffenson has been mayor since 2001. The first town hall was built in 1877. Maple Grove became a city in 1974.
Maple Grove is home to many businesses. Boston Scientific has a large facility here. It employs over 3,000 people. Maple Grove has more retail space than most Minnesota cities. Only Bloomington has more.
