What if these walls could talk? Maota Samoa, also known as Samoa House, stands here on Karangahape Road. It holds stories of community. It holds stories of resilience.

Maota Samoa is more than just a building. It is the first traditional Samoan house built outside of Samoa. Imagine that. It opened on December 15, 1978. This was a time of racial tension in Auckland. The Dawn Raids caused unrest. The Samoa House became a refuge. It was a safe place for the Pacific community.

Back then, Prime Minister Robert Muldoon cut the ribbon. Some found this ironic. He was responsible for the Dawn Raids. Yet, his presence also symbolized something else. It showed the Pacific community was part of New Zealand. They were here to stay.

From the 1950s, Karangahape Road was a hub for Pacific people. Maota Samoa became a versatile space. It housed the Samoan Consulate. It also had a cafe and shops. Health services were available here. It was a vibrant community center. People held events. There were musical performances. Cultural events filled the space. Private functions and fundraisers took place. Artists showcased their work.

In 2016, the Samoan Consulate moved to Māngere. This was due to the growing Pacific population there. The Samoan government owns Maota Samoa. They leased it to non-Pacific organizations. As a result, Pacific people used it less.

But the spirit of Maota Samoa lives on. In 2018, Samoa House Library opened. It is an independent art library. It is a community space. It emerged after specialist libraries closed. The library is run by the Save Fine Arts Library Charitable Trust.

In 2023, Maota Samoa celebrated its 45th anniversary. Over 200 people came. There were speeches and dances. Music filled the air. Markets offered crafts. Community members celebrated. They remembered the past. They looked to the future.

Bonni Tamati works at the Maota Samoa Library. She sees the building as more than an asset. She views it as a cultural treasure. Visibility in central Auckland is important. It allows people to practice their heritage. It allows communities to come together.

Maota Samoa still stands. It provides opportunities for the education sector. It is a central place to gather. It is a place for Pacific people to meet. Don’t believe the hype. There are many memories within these walls. They connect to this place. Maota Samoa is still here.
