“Imagine horses tied to the school fence.” That sounds like a scene from a movie. But it was real life at Manurewa Central School many years ago.

Manurewa Central School stands as a pillar of education in South Auckland. It has a rich history and a deep connection to the community. The school’s journey began long before its current location. It started in the mid-1850s in Wiri. At that time Wiri was known as Woodside.

Initially, classes were held in the Methodist church. This continued until 1873. Then school buildings were erected on the corner of Kerrs Road and Great South Road.

The opening of the Manurewa railway station in 1875 changed things. Woodside declined while Manurewa grew. After much discussion the school moved. It opened at its current site on September 8 1906.

Sixty-three pupils attended the opening. By 1920, there were 250 students. In 1930, there were 500. Manurewa was a rural area back then. Many students rode horses to Manurewa Central School.

Mr. McNaughton was a long-serving teacher. He planted native trees along the school’s north-western boundary. An oak tree was planted in the early 1920s. It became a major feature of Manurewa Central School.

Manurewa’s rapid growth led to changes. Prefabricated classrooms were added in the 1940s and 1950s. The school swimming pool opened in 1940. New schools opened in Manurewa in the 1950s and 1960s. These new schools eased the pressure on Manurewa Central School.

Manurewa Central School continues to focus on student success. The school’s vision is “Effort brings reward”. Its values include passion respect integrity diversity and excellence.

Manurewa Central is a Duffy Books in Homes school. It provides five or more free books to students each year. Eight Year 6 students become School Councillors. They help run the school. They organize activities such as Funtime Lunchtime and Wheels Day.

Manurewa Central School has a long and proud history. It continues to serve the Manurewa community. Manurewa Central School strives for excellence. It encourages students to embrace learning and achieve their full potential.
