Manuel A. Roxas High School stands as a public high school in Paco Manila. Its story began in 1948. It holds the distinction of being the first high school named after former President Manuel Acuña Roxas.
Originally, Manuel A. Roxas High School was on Quezon Boulevard near Feati University. The school started from humble beginnings. It grew to become a significant educational institution in Manila.
Manuel A. Roxas High School is one of six Manila schools with a Special Science curriculum. This specialized program began in the 1980s. The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute spearheaded it. Today, the Division of City Schools maintains these Special Science classes. Manuel A. Roxas High School along with Ramon Magsaysay High School, Victorino Mapa High School, Cayetano Arellano High School, and Manuel Araullo High School implement the Special Science Program. Manila Science High School is a recognized science high school.
To enter the Special Science sections, students must meet specific criteria. Applicants need elementary grades of at least 85 in Science Math and English. They also need 83 in other subjects. The students undergo an examination. The exam tests their knowledge of Sciences and Abstract Reasoning skills.
Students in Special Science get elective subjects. The goal is to give them a strong base in Science. They also study other subjects in detail. There are three Special Science sections per year level at Manuel A. Roxas High School.
The Supreme Student Government leads the student body. Students elect its officers every year. This encourages leadership and participation.
Manuel A. Roxas High School has seven buildings. These include the Main L-Shaped building, Vocational building, Maceda building, Hizon building, Home Economics building, SEDP building, and Administration building. There are also three makeshift structures.
The Main, Vocational, Macaeda, and Hizon buildings house academic classes. The Science and Technology Department uses the H.E. building. The SEDP building hosts H.E. classes. The Administration building has guidance offices, a museum, and an EMIS office.
In June 2006, the Main building was declared “condemned”. The 1990 earthquake in Manila caused the damage. The school squeezed schedules and rooms after the declaration. This led to the creation of 13 makeshift rooms.
On February 22, 2008, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a new building. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the event. The PHP 220 million 4-story building replaced the old structure. Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim, Rep. Benny Abante, Rep. Amado Bagatsing, and Education Secretary Jesli Lapus were also present. The new building is now in use.
