Remember the name Walnut Creek? That’s what Mansfield, Texas was originally called. Today, we explore the vibrant city of Mansfield. It is a place that has transformed from a small settlement into a thriving part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
Mansfield’s story starts with two business partners. Ralph S Man and Julian B Feild built a steam-powered gristmill in 1857. This mill was the first of its kind in North Texas. The settlement that grew around it was named Mansfeild after the two founders. That original spelling changed over time to the Mansfield we know today.
Feild, also the owner of a general store, became the first postmaster in 1860. The Man and Feild Mill played a crucial role during the Civil War. It supplied meal and flour to the Confederate Army. Supplies were transported as far as Shreveport, Louisiana, and Jefferson City, Missouri. After the war, the mill received government contracts. It supplied flour and meal to American Indian reservations. These reservations were located in West Texas, New Mexico, and Indian Territory.
While Feild eventually sold his share and moved back to Fort Worth, Man remained. His home, built in stages starting in 1865, still stands. It is the oldest structure in Mansfield. Restored by the city, it opened as the Man House Museum in 2020. Man also donated the land that became the Mansfield Cemetery.
Mansfield officially incorporated in 1890. The city continued to serve as a hub for the surrounding farmland. Mansfield is located in the south-central part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. It offers easy access to attractions and business centers.
In 1956, a federal court ordered the Mansfield Independent School District to desegregate. This was the first such order in Texas. But protests delayed actual desegregation until 1965.
