What’s in a name? Here in Manor, Texas, that’s not just a philosophical question, it’s a historical one. You see, this town, nestled just a stone’s throw from the bustling heart of Austin, owes its very name to a man named James Manor. Back in 1859, James was the postmaster of a little place called Grassdale. Now, the postal service can be a fickle thing, and in 1860, they decided to close the Grassdale office. But fast forward to 1871, a new post office, named Gregg, popped up. A year later, they decided to rename it Manor, in honor of our friend James. It seems James Manor left a lasting impression! The year 1871 was a big one for Manor. The Houston and Texas Central Railway chugged its way into town, connecting this little community to the wider world. By the mid-1880s, Manor was a bustling hub with a school, churches, general stores –– all the hallmarks of a thriving town. Manor rode the waves of economic booms and busts throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Great Depression hit hard, causing the population to dwindle. But Manor, ever resilient, bounced back, serving as a vital commercial center for farmers in the region. Their livestock and dairy products found their way to market thanks to that trusty railway. Today, Manor stands as a testament to its history, a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the promise of the future. Even the name itself, a simple word, carries the weight of legacy, reminding us of the people like James Manor who helped build this town from the ground up.
