“Books, brains and a beautiful building” might be the motto of Manoa Public Library. This library is not just a place for books. It is a community hub, a green building, and a testament to the power of community collaboration.
Manoa Public Library stands proudly at 2716 Woodlawn Drive. It replaced a smaller library that served the community since 1966. The original library closed in 2009. It was replaced by a modern, eco-friendly structure.
The journey to the new Manoa Public Library was a long one. Efforts to expand the original library began in 1980. State Senator Neil Abercrombie proposed an appropriation to enlarge it. For 25 years community leaders persisted. Senator Brian Taniguchi was determined to meet the community’s growing needs.
In 2005, Senator Taniguchi and Representative Kirk Caldwell secured $6.5 million. This was for the expansion or replacement of the Library. Governor Linda Lingle released these funds in 2006, with additional funds following in 2007.
While the new library was being built, the Manoa Public Library found a temporary home at Noelani Elementary School. In August 2009, around 150 library lovers formed the “Manoa Library Book Brigade”. They helped move books to the interim location. Hawaii Self Storage-Kaimuki provided free storage for library materials.
The new Manoa Public Library officially opened on June 9, 2012. The $10.3 million, 29425-square-foot building boasts creative and innovative design features. State Librarian Richard Burns noted its natural lighting and photovoltaic panels. Water-efficient fixtures are used. Recaptured water irrigates the landscape. Native plants surround the building.
The library sought Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Silver Certification. In 2013, it was awarded the prestigious LEED Gold Certification.
Designed by Gary Kawakami of Architecture Plus, Inc., the library includes 1000 square feet of solar panels. These generate at least 16.6% of the library’s electrical needs. A high-efficiency air-conditioning system keeps patrons comfortable. Free Wi-Fi is available. A computer laptop area provides space for digital work. A separate Programming Room hosts events and activities. Covered parking is available for cars and bicycles.
The Friends of M?noa Library was formed in 1990. This group runs a year-round book sale during library hours. They also host larger book sales twice a year. They provide funding for large projects. They support collection development and year-round programming.
Manoa Public Library offers many programs. These include coding workshops for teens. There are poetry workshops for families. The library also provides Pilates, dance, and gentle yoga classes. Storytimes engage young children. A teen book club encourages reading and discussion.
