Clutching a bag of fish-shaped crackers, a little girl tugs at her father’s hand. “Papa, when will we see Mali?” she asks, her voice echoing with excitement outside Manila Zoological & Botanical Garden. The Manila Zoological & Botanical Garden, affectionately known as Manila Zoo, has been a beloved destination since it first opened its gates on July 25, 1959. This vibrant 5.5-hectare oasis nestled in the heart of Malate, Manila, has offered generations a glimpse into the wonders of the animal kingdom. The little girl’s question evokes a bittersweet memory for her father. He remembers his own childhood visits to see Mali, the Asian elephant who resided at the Manila Zoo for decades. Mali, whose name means “jasmine” in Sinhala, arrived at the zoo as a calf. She became a beloved icon, captivating visitors with her gentle nature. Sadly, Mali passed away in November 2023, a moment of mourning for the entire city. But her memory lives on. The Manila Zoological & Botanical Garden continues to thrive, recently renovated and reopened in November 2022 after a period of closure. It now boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a stunning lagoon waterfall, a spacious big cat enclosure, and dedicated exhibits for marsupials and monkeys. Today, the zoo is home to over 549 animals from at least 12 mammal species, 38 bird species, and 21 reptile species. Among them is Kois, a magnificent White Siberian tiger named as an anagram of former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s nickname. While Mali’s presence is deeply missed, the Manila Zoological & Botanical Garden continues its mission. It provides a sanctuary for diverse wildlife. It educates visitors about the importance of conservation. And it creates lasting memories for families like the one standing at its entrance. “We won’t see Mali today, sweetheart,” the father explains gently to his daughter, pointing to a newly erected display near the entrance. “But we can learn about her amazing life here, and then meet all the other wonderful animals who call Manila Zoo their home.” As they step inside, the sounds of exotic birds and the rustling of leaves greet them, promising a day of adventure and discovery at the heart of this urban jungle.
