Has anyone ever noticed the curious pineapple finials adorning Manila Cathedral? They’re a whimsical touch on this grand structure. Manila Cathedral stands as a testament to resilience, a phoenix rising from the ashes, not once, not twice, but eight times. Originally a humble parish church of nipa, wood, and bamboo built in 1571, Manila Cathedral has weathered typhoons, earthquakes, fires, and wars. Each destruction brought rebirth, each rebirth a new chapter in its architectural story. The second cathedral, built of stone in 1592, fell to an earthquake just eight years later. The third, constructed in 1614, succumbed to a series of earthquakes in 1645. The fourth incarnation, started in 1654, boasted a grand bell tower and a clock. The fifth, a Baroque masterpiece designed by Juan de Uguccioni, was damaged by yet another earthquake in 1852. The sixth, a Neoclassical structure, stood for a mere five years before an earthquake in 1863 claimed it. The seventh cathedral, completed in 1879, saw its bell tower toppled by an earthquake the following year. It would remain towerless until the eighth and current structure was completed. This final destruction came in 1945 during the Battle of Manila, when the cathedral was bombed. From these ruins, architect Fernando Ocampo crafted the Manila Cathedral we see today. He drew inspiration from the Romanesque-Byzantine style of the seventh cathedral, but infused it with modern sensibilities. The result is a blend of styles, a striking Neo-Romanesque facade with Byzantine motifs, those whimsical pineapple finials, and bronze doors depicting scenes from the cathedral’s rich history. Inside, marble floors gleam, mosaic panels shimmer, and light streams through stained glass windows. Manila Cathedral isn’t just a building. It is a living chronicle of Manila’s history, a symbol of faith enduring through adversity. A place where popes have celebrated Mass and presidents have lain in state. A place where the echoes of history whisper beneath the soaring dome, reminding us of the enduring spirit of this magnificent cathedral.
