Envision a space where books meet community. The Manguinhos Library Park stands as a testament to this vision. Opened on April 29 2010 this library park is more than just a building. It is a vibrant hub in the Benfica neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.

The Manguinhos Library Park wasn’t just built. It was carefully crafted to serve the community. Its design draws inspiration from Colombia’s library parks. These parks were created to promote social inclusion in less affluent areas. The dark-pink exterior with white doors welcomes everyone.

Inside the Manguinhos Library Park you’ll find over 25000 books. There are also 900 DVDs and a vast collection of 3 million songs. A theater with 200 seats hosts plays and movie screenings. Classrooms buzz with activity. A special “Meu Bairro” room provides a space for community meetings.

The library park spans 3300 square meters on the site of a former Army Supply Depot. It serves 16 communities in Rio’s North Zone. This transformation created a concentration of social facilities in a historically underserved area.

More than just books are here. The Manguinhos Library Park also offers a modern Cineteatro Eduardo Coutinho. It seats 202 people and features 3D technology. This space has fostered local artistic initiatives like the Manguinhos em Cena theater group.

From 2014 to 2016 the IDG managed the library park. They developed diverse activities that broadened its reach. The Manguinhos Library Park became known as a space for integration social inclusion and cultural experiences.

In nearly three years over 2 million people visited the library park. They accessed books videos and lectures. The IDG expanded programming with debates and theatrical performances. Studios and training courses became available to a diverse audience.

Recent renovations costing R$1.5 million have further enhanced the Manguinhos Library Park. Improvements include painting floor polishing and electrical upgrades. The community actively participated in the project.

The Manguinhos Library Park offers a variety of free courses. These include languages music physical activities and cultural workshops. Classes in jiu-jitsu capoeira and computer skills are also available.

Joyce Mattos a resident of the neighboring Jacarezinho community transformed her life at the library. Starting as a student she now works in the administrative section. She recognizes the library’s potential to change lives.

Today the Manguinhos Library Park stands as a beacon of knowledge and community. It embodies the power of accessible resources and inclusive spaces. It’s a place where stories are shared dreams are nurtured and lives are transformed.
