Atop Mangere Mountain the wind whispers ancient stories. This majestic volcanic cone dominates the southeastern Auckland landscape. It is one of the largest in the Auckland volcanic field. Its peak reaches 106 metres above sea level. Mangere Mountain has been a significant site for Māori for centuries. Its name Te Pane-o-Mataaho refers to Mataaho a volcano god. Another name Te Ara Pueru the dogskin cloak path recalls a pivotal battle.

For thousands of years Māori cultivated sweet potatoes on its slopes. The fertile land sustained thriving communities. Mangere Mountain served as a major pā a fortified settlement. Thousands lived within its protective embrace. Extensive earthworks remain visible today a testament to the ingenuity of its inhabitants. Paramount chief Kiwi Tāmaki even spent time here hunting sharks in the Manukau Harbour. The mountain’s strategic location offered panoramic views vital for defense.

Tragedy struck in the early 1740s. Kiwi Tāmaki was killed in battle. Many Waiohua people fled. Surviving warriors regrouped on Mangere Mountain. They placed pipi shells as a warning system. Clever enemy warriors however covered the shells with dogskin cloaks muffling the sound. They launched a dawn raid. The mountain’s alternate name Te Ara Pueru reflects this cunning attack.

Later Ngāti Whātua hapū settled the area intermarrying with defeated Waiohua. Mangere Mountain again became a central place. A new pā called Whakarongo was established. Even Governor George Grey in the 1840s asked Pōtatau Te Wherowhero to settle his people nearby to defend Auckland. The mountain’s scoria was even used to build the St James Anglican Church.

Quarrying scarred Mangere Mountain between 1924 and 1963. The resulting damage was later transformed into recreational areas. Today the mountain hosts a community playground. A kī-o-rahi field adds to the vibrant mix. The Mangere Mountain Education Centre shares Māori knowledge and culture. Its living museum educates visitors about the mountain’s profound history. The mountain’s past present and future are interwoven a powerful reminder of its enduring significance.
